Largest SIL2 wireless gas detection system in successful operation

GasSecure can report more than a year of successful operation of its largest wireless gas detection system so far. Delivery of in total 122 GS01 wireless gas detectors started fall 2015 and the project at Statoil Denmark Kalundborg Refinery was implemented in three phases. The main scope was to improve the coverage of gas detection in three process areas as determined by a risk analysis.
The installation is not only remarkable by size; but is also the world’s first full-scale SIL2 capable wireless gas detection system according to the IEC 61508 standard. The safety instrumented system (SIS) links the SIL-certified GS01 gas detector and controller using the readily available open safety protocol, PROFIsafe over PROFINET, to enable safe end-to-end communication between the field devices and the safety controller.
Statoil’s experience with this installation is summarized in a case study (earlier presented at the ISA100 Wireless End User Conference - Rotterdam, The Netherlands – Sep. 2016) that may be downloaded here.
